Popes Eye Marine National Park

Pope’s Eye, located within the Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park in Victoria, is a remarkable marine sanctuary known for its rich biodiversity and historical significance. Originally built as part of an incomplete fortification in the 1800s, the structure now serves as a thriving artificial reef. The shallow, sheltered waters of the inner ring are ideal for snorkelers and beginner divers, offering encounters with colorful reef fish, soft corals, and swaying seaweed. Beyond the central platform lies a deeper section, where more experienced divers can explore dramatic drop-offs and encounter larger marine species. Australian fur seals are often spotted resting on the rocks or playfully swimming around the deeper outer edge, adding to the site's wild charm. Pope’s Eye also supports a nesting colony of Australasian gannets, making it a vital haven for both marine and birdlife. It stands as a shining example of Victoria’s commitment to marine conservation.
